Experiential Learning
Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re the chance to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship or study abroad.
Internships
International studies majors who arrange internships either during a regular semester or during the summer and are willing to do academic work in conjunction with their work experience may sign up for IS 388: Internship. Permission of a supervising faculty member and the international studies program coordinator is required in order to take this course.
Students who are interested in securing internships should visit the Career Development Center for more information.
Study Abroad
International understanding and communication depend upon mutual respect and the appreciation of linguistic, cultural and political differences. To develop these qualities all international studies majors complete an experience abroad at least one semester in length. With the approval of the program coordinator, an international studies major may choose a less traditional program of work or community involvement abroad. The University of Richmond sponsors more than 60 study abroad and exchange programs, including semester programs in 25 countries and summer study in Argentina, England, France, Greece, Japan, China, Germany, Ireland, Russia and Spain. Internships and service opportunities are also possible in London, Dublin, Senegal and Honduras.
